The Simple Things
The weekend before the Fulbright Orientation, I read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. This book is beautiful for many reasons, one of which I'll share with you now.
"The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them."
- The Alchemist
This quote has become ever more powerful in the last few weeks when I admitted to myself and others that I have been going through a bit of an existential crisis lately (more on that later). That coupled with being a bit homesick, made me realize I needed a plan of action. This is when I remembered the quote and decided to jot down a few of the amusing, happy, and heartfelt things I've experienced lately to get me through the holiday slump. Here are fifteen of my favorite fall moments thus far:
1. Finally caving in and getting Burger King with some of my Fulbright friends, only to get inside and notice a table full of my students sitting there staring at me. Awkward.

2. Walking into a mini pole on Halloween night. Classic.
3. Sitting campfire style with my students and telling scary stories for Halloween.
4. Being pleasantly surprised when my students were expected to create short horror films as a Halloween project.
5. Feeling slightly embarrassed when one of those films makes me scream in front of the whole class.
6. Showing that same film to a younger group of students and scaring the crap out of them. Hehehehehe
7. Going to get Mexican food with my coworker and her kids (my students) and getting photobombed by the mariachi.
8. Making a Spanish friend who has the NFL game pass. Yes!
9. Forming a book club with some fellow Fulbrighters.
10. Listening to the rain from my sixth story balcony.
11. Finding new places to sip a café con leche.
12. White chocolate cinnamon rolls and deep conversations with close friends.
13. Shared dinners between roommates.
14. The excitement on my roommates faces when I made them Mexican food for the first time.
15. The feeling of community after admitting to others that I'm a bit homesick.
Until next time,
Besos!
Besos!
